1. My initial impression of the book is very positive one. I thoroughly enjoy this book and often I've read ahead just because I want to. This book is unlike anything i've ever read and the change is refreshing it. though it is a true story and almost like a biography, i find it interesting and exciting to read. Krakouers style is so unconventional and at first you find boring but suddenly you are enveloped in his story and want to keep reading. His style is a mix between a historical fiction novel and a reporter and just a fiction writer. The way he emphasises certain aspects of chris mcandless through stories from other people's perspectives and other people who like him, perished in the wild is interesting. The reporter aspect gives the novel a sense you are right there, following the trail to uncover mcandless's story. I thoroughly enjoy the characters chris has met and their take on him though right now i still think he is bit weird for doing what he did, a little too confident.
2. Mystery is the word i would describe mcandless as. not just because we don't know anything about him because we can't ask him ourselves. but the way he lived his life is a complete mystery, even to those who knew him best. Why did he change his name? Why did he burn money and rid himself of almost every worldy possession? Was he too confident going into Stampede Trail or was he simply a hiker who lost his way? There are so many questions that we have and krakauer attempts to answer but can't completely. Was he truly trying to live his life that way or was he just think he was macho and didn't need anything or anyone to survive? Just a rich kid trying to have a big adventure. What happened in his family to make him want to hurt them like that? We don't know these things not because he is dead but because he was a closed person, didn't tell many people his secrets. Even people who knew him pretty well, Wayne and Ron, still couldn't get inside this mysterious guy's head.
3. there are many themes being revealed in the novel up to this point. though some not intentionally put there by the author because it is true story and is very factual. one of them is survival, obviously. also the importance of human contact and family and modern society are all themes. the author is kind of objective but from chris's point of view the human experience needs to be by yourself sometimes and you shouldn't depend on others. also modern conveniences are overrated and you don't need them to survive
4. This is kind of lame show but there was this show on ABC called "Men in Trees." this big time publishing executive from new york visited elmo, alaska and fell in love with the town and moved there. she left there career and bought a secluded cabin and gave up her fast pace lifestyle of new york. this is a more civilized version of mcandless because she gave up everything she knew to start a new life and find herself, mcandless's goal i believe.
5. Every summer i go to camp. camp is in eveleth, mn and the setting is on a lake secluded in nature. its beautiful and i can escape the more hectic life of living in the city and give up things like showering and cell phones. it is great to just get away and try to find myself. Just like Mcandless and his adventure. but i always get home, he did not.
6. many people, especially in edina, have cabins that they get away to on the weekends. this isn't like chris but in many aspects they are trying to get away from their everyday lives and pressures of society. The often dont have electricity or runnning water and they are just living in nature. many people find this necessary to stay sane.

Oh Sandra-Dee!
I love Sandra Bullock. So I assumed when I went to the theater a while ago to see her latest movie it would make me as happy as Ms. Congeniality. But I was disappointed. This movie, to put it lightly, was a flop. The movie Premonition, starring Sandra Bullock, is about a married couple Linda (Bullock) and Jim (Julian McMahon). Linda wakes up one day and she is having a normal day when the doorbell ring and an police officer informs her that her husband is dead. She is distraught and goes through the day telling her kids, preparing for arrangements and grieving. She wakes up the next day and finds her husband still alive. She had a premonition but it was so real that she thought it had happened. So every other day her husband is dead and she is a widow, while the others she has her loving husband by her side. But there is also a side plot of infidelity and other problems within the marriage. Bullock does everything she can to try and stop the death of her husband that she knows is coming but she can't and he eventually dies in a car accident exactly how she saw it.
The plot was terrible, poorly written and hard to follow. I had no idea what was happening and I wanted to get up and leave. Not only is she trying to save her "dead" husband she is also trying to prevent him from cheating on her, too much. This was probably up there with one of the worst movies ive ever seen and I am so disappointed in Bullock, she normally does so much better. There aren't many themes in this movie. Death and destruction, infidelity and family are the prevalent ones but they are so intertwined it is hard to get anything out of this movie. Linda is a devoted wife and mother who is overworked with the stress of running a household. She loves her husband but doesn't have much time for him. She seems sincere but honestly I just didn't believe it. It was just that horrible. Jim is the character that she loves and he is a great father but not so great husband. He considers cheating on his wife and he is the one she is supposed to be grieving over.
Linda: I wake up and he's dead. I wake up and he's alive.
The above quot is the entire plot of the movie. The acting wasn't that bad, it would be better if the movie itself was good. The directing and the writing combined are just terrible. A confusing plot, an overwhelming soundtrack. Unnecessary details added, like Bullock smoking when it has nothing to do with the plot or anything for that matter. Scenes are disjointed, not just the ones Jim dies and then comes back to life. The entire movie is confusing, weird and just plain bad. Don't waste money by seeing this. I hope Sandra chooses a better project to work on than this next time, I miss her witty lines and slapstick humor. She should just stick to movies that make us cry from laughter, not from pain.

Twilight!
Twilight Review
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Stephenie Meyer writes a novel that has captured millions of young adults across the nation, some adults now too. She tells a tale of unassuming, normal teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. Shortly after moving to Forks, Bella discovers something unusual about Edward Cullen and the Cullen family, a group of kids who go to her school. She uncovers the truth about the mysterious family; they are vampires. At first she is frightened but things get complicated when she falls in love with Edward and vice versa. But soon danger threatens their love and the novel explores the adventure they must go on to save Bella's life.
The book was written for teenage girls so it is clearly not a very advanced book and the writing isn't fabulous. But the plot and the way it was written captures you so you can't put it down. It can easily be finished in one day and which happened to me when I first picked them up a few months ago.
Twilight is a love story between two unlikely people. And explores a world that is enthralling and dangerous, a world we soon want to be apart of after reading. The love between Bella and Edward can show people that love is found in the most unusual places, a theme prevalent in the novel. They are complete opposites not just in the sense he is a vampire. They come from different worlds and still find a way to be together. Love is very powerful as seen in Twilight. It can lead to self sacrifice and dangerous deeds but turn out to be worth it in the case for Bella and Edward. Love can at the same time be destructive, tearing people apart and toying with emotions. The love that the main characters experience is real, though perfect at times; they experience hardships, arguments, danger, and the complete strength that love can provide.
The story centers around Isabella (Bella) Swan, a 17 year old originally from Phoenix. She moves to Forks her Junior year to be with her dad. She isn't much into the whole talking thing and prefers to be on her own. She hasn't ever connected with someone her own age or anyone for that matter, her mother coming the closest to really understanding her. She isn't selfish, moving to Forks so her mother can be with her new husband. Nothing exciting has ever happened in her life. Meyers portrays Bella as a typical teenage girl and gets a lot of things right. She become relatable, there isn't anything remarkable about her. She is average height, looks, weight, everything is just kind of average. some say Bella fell too quickly for Bella or things about her weren't realistic but i think she is perfect example of an American teenager. Edward Cullen is the other main character and Bella's love interest. He looks like a 17 year old boy but in reality he is over 100 years old. Born in 1901 he becomes a vampire after being saved by his "father" from death from the Spanish influenza in Chicago. He has lived with the family for a long time but has never found someone unlike his dad, mom, brothers and sisters. He is the loner and he seems content with this. He is very intelligent, using the time he saves not sleeping for learning. He has lived his life peacefully and uneventfully untill he meets Bella. Edward is transformed into the perfect guy for Bella and millions of other girls across America. He is breathtakingly beautiful, intelligent, charming, and sweet. He can sweep you off your feet. Critics say he is too perfect. But of course he is; he is a vampire after all. There is nothing normal about him. The other characters include the interesting Cullen family, Calisle, Esme, Rosalie, Jasper, Emmett and Alice. Bella's father, Charlie, mom Renee and Jacob. The author's style is extremely descriptive. Often too much so. Though the writing isn't the strong point the way she weaves a tale and keeps you captivated is truly a gift.
"I sat without moving, more frightened of him than I had ever been. I’d never seen him so completely freed of that carefully cultivated facade. He’d never been less human… or more beautiful."
People may have problems with Twilight but I love. Its a great way to escape to another world and pass the time falling love, sadly, with a fictional character. I don't care what other people say; Edward bite me :)

BARACK MY WORLD
I would bring up a lot of things even though i already know he is planning to do something about them. but i would like to know details. i think i would bring up the environment to make sure he is actually planning on doing something to help the world and not just saying it. also i would bring up the economy because i'm going to be an adult soon and i would like to be able to feel safe with my money and i would really like to have a bright future. also i want him to spend money on education because i want my kids to have a good future and chance to succeed and often times education gets put on the back burner. also i would really like him to unite the country, like he has already started to. In his acceptance speech he mentioned something about not having blue and red states just states. i would really like to see that happen and not just talk about him. but most of all i would tell him what a great job i think he is doing and tell him i'm looking forward to the next four years very much.
1. in four short years i think our country will be on the path to recovery. hopefully our economy will have bottomed out and be on the rise and we can feel financial security because i will be a senior in college and about ready to start my adult life. also i think people will begin to realize our world and the environment are in danger and people will actually pay attention and do something about it. and we will most likely not be at war. and hopefully some of our debt can be erased.
2. the biggest issue when i'm forty will be the economy because i will have kids and i'll want them to have a good life and go to college. also education. but the biggest issue in 2035 will be the the environment because who knows how long our sun is going to last and our environment needs to be healthy for us to live in it and be safe. That will for sure be the biggest issue because we're not doing anything about it now.

love is like a...
A Birthday
My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a water'd shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
Whose boughs are bent with thick-set fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these,
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hand it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.
Christina Georgina Rossetti
The theme is this poem is a little harder to decipher. But i think it means that her heart is heavy with love, full to the brim with it and she wants love in return or her love to show it and he finally does. So i think that she is trying to say, show your love and and how love can be so beautiful.
The author compares the love that she feels for this person to everyday things. i think this helps the reader understand the extent of her love because it gives us something tangible to think about. If you just say i love you a lot someone won't necessarily understand how much but if you say my love is like an ocean for example you can understand it is vast and deep. it make the poem more accesible.
Love metaphor
Love is like a shot. It can hurt a lot but in the long run it can be good for you.
Love is like a good movie, you never want it to end.

love poem :)
The Ocean
You swim out to sea, unaware of the depths
below
swirling and whirling, mysteries
It can sweep you up and take you under
Helpless to its control.
Drowning happens to those not careful
But to flourish is the aim
One can’t imagine everything that it contains
The Beauty, The Beast, The Life
The Love
You swim out to sea, unaware of the depths
below
swirling and whirling, mysteries
It can sweep you up and take you under
Helpless to its control.
Drowning happens to those not careful
But to flourish is the aim
One can’t imagine everything that it contains
The Beauty, The Beast, The Life
The Love

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

1. I picked this poem because its a poem about a strong woman who is confident in who she is. She isn't afraid to sound conceited and exerts herself and enforces the beauty of being a woman. and Maya Angelou is one of my favorite poets.
2. The title isn't trying to get at any hidden meanings. It is straighforward and is the point of the whole poem summed up in two words. I like titles like these, the ones that don't keep you guessing even after you have read the poem.
3. The poem uses several literary devices to enhance the work. One of them is rhyme. It doesn't rhyme after every line it does after every four or so. This just keeps the whole poem together and makes it sound nice. And the rhymes aren't a stretch so it sounds like she is trying to rhyme. It flows nicely. Which leads to another device. She uses short lines and creates a rhythm that keeps the poem moving. When you read it faster it has more meaning because each line is more powerful. The sound of the poem goes along with the tone of the poem as i'll describe below.
4. The poem does indeed have a tone. This tone is happy, confident, independent and passionate. Its the tone of a woman who knows who she is and isn't afraid to share with the rest of the world. I think the tone is very powerful and should be an envy of others to write poems with this kind of passion.

Accents!
What is it about an accent? when you meet a guy, at least for me, if he has an accent he is automatically bumped up a few points. he could be mean, not very good looking, and stupid, but if he has a British or Australian or Irish accent hes hot in my book. it the weirdest thing. because anything said in a british accent sounds smart, distinguished and just plain beauitful. Australian and irish accents just make the speaker sound cool, like they know what they're talking about and just so many levels above you. but take the same guy and give him a midwestern accent, and he may not look so great. why is that? why is it the sound of a voice can change a person's perspective of another person completely? i dont know, and i dont really care. all i know is i like accents.
the past few days i have been really out of whack. ive gotten like no sleep everynight so when i get home i need to take a nap. and i'm so tired that this nap takes 3 or 4 or 5 hours, instead of the 1 i had planned on. I then wake up refreshed but its only like an hour until i should go to bed. so i get dinner and work on homework. but i dont go to bed until really late because i'm simply not tired. then the cycle starts over again the next day. this schedule is not healthy for me and its really screwing me up. i'm becoming nocturnal and i'm not ok with it. i havent yet gotten into a rhythm for this school year yet and this sleep arrangement is not helping at all. i'm really stressed lately and its not good, especially with college applications looming. lets hope that changes soon!

Discover
Adventures. I may not have any extreme things going on in my life like jumping out of a plane but I have had a few good times in my life.
When I was working up at camp this summer, my friend mary had her birthday. For a fun night we decided to go to this cute mexican restaurant in this cute iron range town called Virginia. After eating we went on the real adventure, although the huge chicken enchiladas were a little hard to stomach. We went to Lake Ore Be Gone, to go cliff jumping.
I had never done this before and I was more than scared. We got there, changed into our swimsuits and looked down from the 30 foot cliff. It was the bluest water I had ever seen outside of the tropics. I hesitated for a few minutes and then decided to go for it. I ran across the cliff and held my nose (didn't want to take any chances) and landed in the beautiful water. On the way down you have time to think about what you just did, the fact you willingly jumped off a cliff. But it is the most exhilirating thing I've ever done. I was so proud of myself and couldn't wait to do it again. So the next time someone asks me if my friends jumped off a cliff, would I? The answer is yes, I would, and I would had a blast doing it.
